MY JOURNAL OF EXPERIENCES:

why “context is content”?

Nothing exists, and therefore can be understood, in isolation from its context, for it is the context that gives meaning to what we think and do. Context is everything. - Gouldner

The idea behind this blog is to talk about challenges and opportunities during the content creation process. Sometimes in practice the focus is being placed on content creation and individual taste, while context and purpose get completely disregarded.

Every conversation or exchange consists of content and context: the content is what we say, while the context is its purpose, what it is about and how it fits into the reality. Context provides clarity and value to your audience by lending meaning to the content. In my opinion, engaging, factual, authentic and meaningful conversations have context and content fully aligned.

Imagine designing assets for a platform you have no access to and based on a one sentence brief: “We need design that captures our values, here is the list of them, and the format is 16x9 - we need it ASAP.” Such brief reflects absence of knowledge and appreciation for the content creation process, which almost inevitably results in mediocre output.

In other words, would you call a tailor on the phone and order a custom made dress or a suit, for tomorrow?

To understand the context and make effective future decisions (based on factual and meaningful inputs), knowledge on its own is not enough. One must have the capacity and courage to overcome subjective biases, fears and mitigate blind spots.

Regardless if you are a niche business owner, or one who is trying to appeal to a broad audience, a thorough analysis of your business context will provide you with valuable inputs for defining your content marketing strategy.

One of your goals may be to focus on building a strong or at least minimal social media presence. The success of a newly defined social media approach or rebranding endeavor, website redesign etc. depends and should be based on your context. “Context shapes who you are” - C. W.

Let’s collaborate if you strive to align context and content in your marketing endeavors and prefer to engage with your audience and collaborators in a meaningful and authentic manner.
